I play the drums as a hobby. Even played in a band and did some gigs before. I never used them the way they did in this book..

Imaging sixty-six people chanting, dancing, and beating the drums in a religious ceremony. The scene is intense and there are blood sacrifices being made with chickens. It is a pure picture of voodoo. Then everyone one of the sixty-six die…

FBI agent Martin Irons is introduced on his way to the scene. He is called in from the Santa Rosa sheriff who is over their head with this case. While investigating, Irons touches one of the dead and the dead person suddenly comes back to life and speaks. Irons is surprised and almost goes into shock which causes his co-workers to question him..

Not a bad start to what could end up being a good series. The story centers on some true to life religions such as La Regla Lucumi or Santeria, but make no mistake, the book is a lie. It clearly states this in the closing pages. The picture it paints about these religions and their practices are all false and are changed to help the story. There is also a glossary provided to explain some of the complex content.

Investigative crime scenes, mysterious religious ceremonies, and a touch of the supernatural make this an interesting read. I’m still on the fence and I want to see where the series goes. Not bad overall though. The art work was right on. Dark, gloomy, and a little gory, it fit like a glove in helping tell the story.
