Drums #2 Review

Why do seemingly dead people come back to life and kill others?  Maybe they are mad and want the living to be dead like they are..

Dr. Block is finished with her autopsy of the dead found from the Santa Rosa ritual.  Nothing is found. No toxins, viruses, or infections.  Rigor mortis hasn’t even set in.  As she is washing up to head home, a hand reaches around her throat and her neck is crushed.   The dead have came alive again and killed the doctor. They then stuff her into the dead man’s drawer in the morgue and return to their gurneys to lay in wait for their next victim…

Agent Irons, while investigating, is in the midst of an Itutu ritual. This is a funeral rite for the souls of the dead Santeros.  When the drums THOOM in his head, he passes out and sees a vision of Chango, a divinity of thunder and lightning.  The main Santeros (preiests) believe Irons was possessed by him. This is highly unusual for someone who has not been initiated into the Santeria religion.

Later that night Irons sees a vision of one of the dead…

This chapter is surrounded by mystery.  It appears that Irons is being singled out by the Santeria religion.  I’m betting that he is the key to stopping this evil from spreading.  Torres has created a whole new world surrounded by a strange religion.  Luckily there is a glossary that explains the terms used in the dialogue.  I found myself referring to it on several occasions.  It really caught my interest like I would not have expected.   Very unique in a world where most comics are about kicking butt and saving the Earth. I felt like I was getting educated and I actually liked it.   Maybe they should have made my school day studies in a comic instead of a text book and I might have done better..

Hernando’s art is dark and gloomy.  A perfect setting for the story where the rain and lightning hasn’t stopped since page three of the first chapter.  I like the detail of the autopsy cuts on the walking dead.  It gave them a unique appeal..   My favorite pane is the one with Chango standing as big as a building!

Although this chapter has been out a while, I was unable to get it till recently.  I wasn’t sure I would finish this series with all the trouble of locating this chapter but I’m glad I didn’t give up on it.  I like the story and find the religious aspect intriguing.  I’ll be sure to finish this series!
