The Griff Review

I’ve had this novel for a while. I read the whole book the day I got it. I couldn’t put it down. I haven’t posted anything here as I didn’t know how I should or what I should write about it. New to the whole comic book scene, this was the first graphic novel I’ve ever read. I’m just getting use to having to wait for the next chapter to see what happens in comics, and now to have a complete story all at once is great. And what a story this is.
I love anything regarding Armageddon type stories. My favorite Steven King book is The Stand. I’m fascinated with the 2012 end of the world theories. That is what made this novel stand out for me. An invasion by aliens who use dragon type creatures to annihilate the human race. The struggle of our handful of characters to survive and try to save humanity. It drew me in and made me fall in love with Mo, the tough little red-head who is full of grit. She bands with Steve, a skater punk who doesn’t stand a chance with her. These two run into Curt and the trio sets out to find someway to survive. Their adventure leads them to much more.
Liz, Shamu’s trainer, is another of the characters. She is another strong woman and her passion for her marine animals is tremendous. She plays a vital roll in the way this story plays out..
Overall I was impressed. I can see why Christopher Moore is a New York Times Bestselling Author. Teamed up with Ian Corson, the two created something great.
Rosero’s art brought the whole story to life in a visually stunning display. I liked the characterizations and really enjoyed the art of the griffs. My favorite pane has to be when Mo finds the B.F.G.. Her expression was like “Bring it Sucker”!!
If you are like me and have never read a graphic novel, pick one up. You don’t know what you are missing. The Griff is a good one to start with!
